Is Technology a Danger to Our Children or an Opportunity?

Technology has changed the way our children learn, communicate, and understand the world. A mobile phone can open the door to knowledge, creativity, and new opportunities. But the same device can expose children to harmful content, cyberbullying, unhealthy habits, and endless distractions.

So, should we keep technology away from our children, or teach them to use it wisely?

I believe the real question is not whether technology is good or bad. The real question is whether we are preparing our children to handle it responsibly.

The Warning Signs Parents Should Not Ignore

Technology becomes a concern when it begins interfering with a child’s daily life. Parents should pay attention to these warning signs:

  • Excessive screen time: Your child consistently neglects sleep, studies, physical activity, or family interaction.
  • Emotional changes: Your child becomes unusually irritable when devices are unavailable or appears distressed after using social media.
  • Online safety risks: Your child encounters inappropriate content, cyberbullying, suspicious strangers, or requests for private information.
  • Declining self-confidence: Your child constantly compares their appearance, achievements, or lifestyle with people online.
  • Loss of real-world connection: Your child increasingly avoids family conversations, friendships, and activities they once enjoyed.

These signs do not automatically mean a child has a problem with technology, but they deserve attention and an open conversation.

How Can Parents Respond?

1. Set boundaries, not just restrictions.

Establish screen-free times during meals and before bedtime. Keep devices out of bedrooms overnight where practical, and ensure children have time for sleep, exercise, hobbies, and family interaction.

2. Teach children to think critically.

Discuss online privacy, misinformation, inappropriate content, and the difference between reality and carefully edited social media posts. Use age-appropriate parental controls, but remember that technology alone cannot replace guidance.

3. Make it safe to ask for help.

If children fear punishment every time they make a mistake, they may hide their online experiences. Encourage them to tell you when something makes them uncomfortable, and respond calmly before deciding what needs to be done.

4. Model the behaviour you expect.

If you want your children to put their phones away during conversations, do the same yourself. Children observe our habits more closely than we sometimes realise.

5. Show them what technology can create.

Encourage children to use digital tools for learning, creativity, research, and developing useful skills, not merely passive scrolling and entertainment.

The Greater Responsibility of Parenting

Banning technology is not always the answer, and unrestricted access is not responsible parenting either. Children need age-appropriate boundaries, increasing independence, and the judgement to make good decisions when their parents are not present.

Technology will continue to change. What must grow alongside it is our children’s character, self-discipline, empathy, and sense of responsibility.

This is an important part of Tarbiyat: preparing children not only to navigate the world, but to make thoughtful choices within it.

In my book, Tarbiyat-e-Aulad Ka Nizaam, I explore the wider responsibilities involved in raising children with awareness and care.

For parents seeking practical guidance on managing screen time, setting healthy boundaries, understanding child behaviour, and building responsible habits, my Effective Parenting Course offers a structured approach to navigating everyday parenting challenges.

A Question for Every Parent

Technology can be a wonderful opportunity or a genuine risk. Much depends on how it is used and the guidance children receive.

We cannot protect our children from every challenge, nor should we deprive them of every opportunity. Our responsibility is to prepare them for both.

Ask yourself: If your child had unrestricted access to technology tomorrow, would they have the judgement to use it wisely?

The answer begins not with the device, but with the guidance we provide today.
